As part of its continuous efforts to strengthen sustainable capacity development systems in the Western Balkans, RCDN+ delivered a specialised training on “Psychological Foundations of Effective Facilitation” for its network of Master Trainers, trainers and training managers.
The training represents another important step in RCDN+’s long-term investment in the professional development of Master Trainers recognising their critical role as multipliers of knowledge, facilitators of learning processes and future leaders of capacity development within the water and sanitation sector.
While technical expertise remains essential, effective training is equally shaped by the ability to understand participants, create a safe learning environment and respond constructively to different group dynamics. The training focused on strengthening these interpersonal and psychological aspects of facilitation, enabling participants to better navigate complex situations during trainings, peer exchanges and other capacity development activities.
Developing More Effective and Participant-Centred Facilitation Approaches
During the training, participants explored how trainers’ own approaches, communication styles and behavioural patterns influence learning outcomes. Through interactive exercises, reflection, group discussions and practical applications, Master Trainers and trainers developed greater self-awareness and gained practical tools to improve their facilitation practice.
Key topics included:
- understanding trainer competencies with a focus on professional approach and participant-centred facilitation;
- recognising and addressing fears and concerns experienced by trainers and participants during learning processes;
- creating psychological safety and supporting constructive dialogue;
- identifying dysfunctional interaction patterns through the Karpman Drama Triangle and developing more functional responses;
- exploring how personal mindsets and life positions influence communication and trainer behaviour.
The sessions encouraged participants to reflect on their own facilitation styles, identify areas for further development and strengthen their ability to adapt their approach according to participants’ needs and group dynamics.
Strengthening the RCDN+ Trainer Pools
The training builds on RCDN+’s broader efforts to establish a strong and sustainable network of qualified trainers and Master Trainers across the Western Balkans. By continuously investing in their skills, competencies and professional development, RCDN+ supports the creation of a regional pool of facilitators capable of delivering high-quality capacity development activities beyond the project timeframe.
Through these continuous learning opportunities, Master Trainers are further equipped to support national training systems, contribute to Communities of Practice and ensure that knowledge and experience are shared throughout the water and sanitation sector.
The “Psychological Foundations of Effective Facilitation” training once again demonstrated that successful capacity development is not only about transferring knowledge it is about enabling meaningful interaction, building trust and creating learning environments where participants can actively engage, reflect and apply new skills in practice.
