From 5 to 6 December 2024, the Association of the Units of Local Self-Governments (ZELS) through the support of RCDN, organized a workshop in Gevgelija, North Macedonia. This event supported 12 pilot municipalities in developing local integrated water management plans, aligning with national regulations and EU directives.
Strengthening Local Capacities for Water Management
The workshop focused on empowering municipalities to develop systematic approaches for sustainable water management, covering drinking water supply and wastewater management.
Key Goals and Topics Addressed:
- Building partnerships between municipalities and public utility companies (PUCs).
- Analyzing the legal framework and identifying areas for improvement.
- Introducing methodologies for data mapping and integrated planning.
- Enhancing communication and coordination with national institutions.
Interactive Learning and Practical Tools
Participants engaged in hands-on sessions which included group exercises, data-mapping activities, and discussions on challenges and solutions.
Key Highlights:
- Presentation of water legislation and regulatory updates.
- Development of draft action plans tailored to each municipality.

By the end of the workshop, municipalities had:

Participants highlighted the workshop’s relevance in addressing challenges related to water infrastructure and governance. They emphasized the need for continued support and follow-up to achieve long-term sustainability.
